AUDITION INFO
Fall 2023 Semester
Date: September 2nd and 3rd starting at 10 am
Location: The Union 256
Auditionees will be notified about their audition status shortly following the September 3rd audition date. Those receiving a callback will be sent a email providing them with further instructions on callback preparations.
What to Prepare
60-90 seconds (about a verse and chorus) of any song of your choice. This song should highlight your voice, range and other vocal abilities! You can sing from any genre, but typically encourage avoiding classical or musical theatre songs since they are typically not a part of our repertoire and we want to visualize you within the group.
Other Audition Info
The audition will also feature some of the following elements:
- A simple range test
- Ear Training: three to four note combinations are played twice, you sing them back the third time
- Special Skills: if you can beatbox or have other talents you think could add to the group, this is your time to show us!

FAQ
How often are auditions?
We conduct auditions with the rest of the JMU a capella community at the beginning of each Fall and Spring semester
Can I audition for more than one group?
Yes, in fact we ENCOURAGE it! There are 9 other talented and diverse groups to audition for on campus. You can find more information about the other groups here
Do I need to have any prior singing experience?
Not at all! There are several members over the years who have never had prior formal singing experience or are music majors. Can't currently read sheet music? That's also ok; our members are always willing to help new members in learning music and teaching!
Is one audition day better than the other?
Nope! We hold auditions over two days to better accommodate your schedule and to shorten the audition time each day for current members. You only need to come to one audition day
What are rehearsals like?
We rehearse this semester twice a week; however these days and times are subject to change each semester based on member availability . We also occasionally host Saturday rehearsals to prepare for major upcoming performances, gigs, and to do group bonding
If I didn't get in this time or previously, can/should I audition again?
Yes, in fact many current members did not get in on their first time; and this is okay! The group has different needs every semester. We really hope you'll come back out and audition!
I am not able to attend either audition day, can I still audition?
Why of course! Please contact the Acaqueen, Josh Mapoy, with your conflict and he will work out something with you! Please email at [email protected]
